20-Hydroxyecdysone StructureEcdysones are a group of steroid hormones that regulate metamorphosis, cell death, and reproduction in arthropods. They are found in nearly a million different species all together, including in plant species worldwide. 20-Hydroxyecdysone is the most functionally active and widely distributed ecdysone in both arthropods and plants. During metamorphosis, the level of 20-hydroxyecdysone in the insect body changes, activating signaling through an ecdysone receptor to mature the larva and/or pupa into an adult insect.

20-Hydroxyecdysone hormone in plants has also gained interest because of a potential role of the hormone in a defense mechanism to protect plants against insects by disrupting the insects’ life cycle. Recent studies have discovered the ability of 20-hydroxyecdysone to increase osteogenesis and bone mass by reducing cartilage degradation and increasing protein synthesis in humans; creating interest in 20-hydroxyecdysone as a potential treatment for osteoporosis.
