As the summer heat blazes on, there’s nothing quite like a refreshing scoop of ice cream to cool down. But what if your favorite summer treat could also improve your health? One study by Sanguigni et al. out of Rome, Italy, revealed that a natural antioxidant ice cream does just that — reducing oxidative stress and enhancing vascular function.  

Eating Ice Cream for Science 

The controlled, single-blind, crossover study involved 14 healthy, non-smoking volunteers aged between 20 and 40. These participants were divided into two groups, each consuming 100 grams of either the antioxidant ice cream or a milk chocolate control ice cream. The natural antioxidant ice cream was packed with dark cocoa powder, hazelnut, and green tea extracts, known for their high polyphenol content. After a week-long washout period, the groups switched ice creams, allowing researchers to compare the effects comprehensively. 

Using the Arbor Assays Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP™) Colorimetric Detection Kit (K043-H), the researchers assessed the antioxidant status of the participants’ plasma. The FRAP assay measures the plasma’s ability to reduce ferric-tripyridyltriazine to its ferrous colored form, providing a clear indication of antioxidant capacity.  

The results were refreshingly clear: the antioxidant ice cream significantly increased serum polyphenol levels (P < 0.001), reduced oxidative stress markers like hydrogen peroxide (P < 0.001), and improved FRAP values (P < 0.005). Furthermore, the participants showed enhanced vascular function, as indicated by improvements in Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD), along with better physical performance metrics. 

Sweet Conclusions 

This study’s findings underscore the potential health benefits of consuming foods rich in natural antioxidants. These foods can improve cardiovascular health and physical performance by reducing oxidative stress and enhancing vascular function. Looking ahead, this study opens the door to further exploration of antioxidant-rich diets and their possible therapeutic applications. Future research could explore the long-term effects of regular antioxidant ice cream consumption on aging and chronic disease prevention.
