Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like superoxide (O2·), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) is a normal part of life. Moderate concentrations are involved in a number of signaling pathways, synthesis of cellular structures, and host defense against pathogens. However, excessive or unchecked ROS production can cause cellular damage and has been implicated in a variety of pathologic and age-related conditions.
