Oxidative stress occurs when excess reactive oxygen species cause damage to biological systems. An unbalanced cellular redox state can result in production of peroxides and free radicals that damage cell components including proteins, lipids and DNA. Consequently, significant research into causes and management of oxidative stress is warranted and ongoing.
